The Hair Collective

Beth Bradley

Meet Beth Bradley!  She is the owner of The Collective Hair Studio, a sustainable hair salon in North Palm Beach.  Certified as a GreenCircle Salon, they recycle about 90% of the items they use including the hair trimmings which are upcycled and used in building insulation.  She aligned with this B Corp Certified organization to do as much as possible to slow the impact hair salons have on the environment.  Everything from the aerosol cans, plastic bottles, foil wraps, and even the unused hair dye gets recycled.  She wants to motivate others to do the same, including encouraging commercial landlords to offer more recycling options for their properties.

Her passion is being a hair color specialist and she has been doing it for 23 years.  She eats, sleeps, and breaths hair color.  She can do everything for your hair but this is her focus and real love.

She has one sister and they were raised in Michigan by their hard-working, single mom.  She moved to South Florida 20 years ago and met her husband, Justyn, in 2002.  He is also a small business owner who owns Sand Castle Pools in Jupiter.  The couple is blessed with a wonderful son, Vaughn, who is now 17 years old and goes to G-Star School of the Arts.

Thank you, Beth, for your dedication and commitment to protecting our environment, keeping our hair beautiful and your love for The Palm Beaches.

Q: What inspired you or led you to your current career?

A:  “I have always loved hair.  There is really nothing else I’ve wanted to do.  My mom was a single mom so there was no extra money.  One thing she always did is get her hair done in a nice Salon.  I remember the smell.  It smelled like Shaper hairspray and curling iron, which any hairdresser knows what that smell is.  I used to sweep hair.  It was the 80’s and everyone looked pretty to me with their edgy hair, high heels, and perms.  I felt that everyone was so cool at the salon.  I did a year of community college when I graduated high school and wasted my time and my parent’s money.  I ended up getting a job at a salon in the mall in Ann Arbor, Michigan.  I loved everything about it.  I worked at the front desk and I also sold products.  It wasn’t until about 1995 or 1996 when I decided that I wanted to go to beauty school.  I left Michigan and moved to Columbus, Ohio and went to Nationwide Beauty Academy.  It was the best thing I ever did.  I love, love, love hair – the industry, the beauty of it, the chemistry, and the people.  I love coming to work every day.

A: Q: What is your favorite restaurant in The Palm Beaches, and what do you love there?

A:  “Coolinary Café in Jupiter.  I get whatever Tim, the owner, tells me to get.  I really respect them as small business owners.  The Clams are a definite go-to and the rib eye is a top favorite right now but I like everything from there.”

Q: How long have you lived or worked in The Palm Beaches?

A:  “20 years.”

Q: Who is the most interesting person you’ve met here in The Palm Beaches?

A:  “There’s been a lot of very interesting people.  I’ve met some really beautiful clients over the years that I’ve developed relationships with.  But I would say, Dr. Ken Grey, he’s an acupuncturist.  He’s pretty interesting with his approach to medicine, wellness, and nutrition.”

Q: If you could travel anywhere in the world right now, where would it be? And why?

A:  “Italy!  Two summers ago, I was lucky enough to go to Italy.  I went with my son.  My husband couldn’t take time off of work so my son and I went.  Neither of us had ever been out of the country before and it was a game-changer.  We loved everything about it.  We went to Rome, Florence, and Venice.  I can’t wait to go back.  It was amazing!”

Q: What is your favorite movie OR what is the first movie you remember seeing in a theatre?

A:  “Top gun was my first movie. I could still quote it to this day.  I must have watched it a hundred times.  It’s really a great movie.  Steel Magnolias because it takes place in a beauty salon and is about the relationships these women have.  It’s an endearing movie.”

Q: What advice would you give a crowd of people?

A:  “Go for it.  There’s definitely fear in opening your own business but I say go for it.”

Q: What is something on your bucket list?

A:  “I would love to take a cooking class in Italy.”

Q: What is your favorite music/ 3 bands you would like to see (dead or alive)?

A:  “Drake, Lady Gaga and Pink.”

Q: What current/former local business makes you the most nostalgic about The Palm Beaches?

A:  “Captain Charlie’s Reef Grill.  Ross and his wife, the owners, were like the pioneers of Leftover, Food Shack and even Coolinary Cafe.  If you look at his menu and the menu of those restaurants, you see that he started it and all those guys worked for him.  He’s so happy for all of them opening their own businesses.  Ross is behind the bar every night and he just loves food.  Every time you go there you end up talking to other people about how much you love the place and the food.  Reef Grill is kind of like the quintessential Jupiter, North Palm Beach, it kind of looks like a dive sort of place but you could be sitting next to a multi-millionaire and you would never know it.  That’s what’s so cool about it, it is so great.”

Q: Choosing anyone alive and a non-relative with whom would you love to have lunch? Why and where would you have lunch?

A:  “Lady Gaga.  She’s a great human.  We will have lunch at Leftovers Café since Coolinary is closed for lunch now.”

Q: What is your favorite thing or something unique about The Palm Beaches?

A:  “This is going to sound really weird, I hated the bridge.  The bridge on alternate A1A, when it goes up and you have to stop and you get to like look at the lighthouse.  The bridge kind of gives you a pause, it’s such a magnificent thing to see that bridge go up and realized my business is on the other side of it and it also gives the chance to take a breath, think about that I get to go to work.”

Q: Where do you see yourself in 5 or 10 years?

A:  “I would really love to open up another salon with one of my team members.  I hashtag a lot,  #CollaborationoverCompetition.  I really believe in that with every fiber of my being.   I would like to become an investor in my labor of love and invest in other people’s talents.  Maybe even open another business for a passion project.”

Q: (Even for friends or family), what is something interesting that most people don’t know about you?

A:  “I come across as really bitchy, very strong and secure but I don’t think people know how sensitive I am.  Not so much about my feelings, but about animals, the homeless or seeing an older person eating alone.”

Q: What 3 words or phrases come to mind when you think of the word HOME?

A:  “Justyn, Vaughn, and my friends.”

Q: If you had a full-time staff member that was fully paid for, who would you choose?

Chef, Housekeeper, Driver, Coach, Physical Fitness Trainer, or Nanny?

A:  “Chef, for sure!”

Q: If you were cast into a major motion picture and had your choice of anyone to be your co-star, who would you choose?

A:  “Bradley Cooper.  He’s so talented, he seems cool and relatable.  He used his own dog in his movie ‘A Star is Born’.”
